Pole Position by Jay Denny

January 2025 - Pole Position

About the Image(s)

It was taken last May in a family trip. Some have suggested it is too busy but I think this captures the scene of the gondolas waiting for a full day of work. This was taken early before the crowds at St Mark's swelled. Z 6ii, 20 mm, ISO 1250, f7.1, 1/1600 sec.

Jay, iconic image of Venice. Interesting vantage point with tower and dome in the background. Nice light with no harsh areas. Sharp.   Posted: 01/14/2025 10:07:58

Thanks so much. I am new to the group as you know. Appreciate the kind words. Look forward to getting to know the group and the knowledge of its experience in travel photography.
BTW. I am going to New Zealand next month. If you or anyone else has thoughts would appreciate hearing them.   Posted: 01/14/2025 11:37:36

Jay, I like the lines in this photo, so I am impressed with the gondolas, just as they are.

Notice that the stern of the gondolas all angle left. Also the tower in the background angles left (but then this could be an issue with Venice). When I copied the photo into paint and used a gridline, the photo itself angles very slightly left. A slight adjustment might make the posts angle slightly right, but may still look more correct otherwise. My Dad tells me that it was taken with a (wide angle) 20 mm lens that gives a slight curvature, which is showing up in the picture. Also add "Venice, Italy" somewhere in the description.

The blue near-center gondola offers some nice color in the photo.   Posted: 01/14/2025 14:49:56

I'm even newer, Jay. I like this take on Venice. Have never been there myself, but we've all seen various takes on the gondola life of the canals. This is a different view which I like. Scudding clouds, and muted colors are nice. There will be distortion with a wide angle which you can correct in PhotoShop should you desire to straighten the edges.   Posted: 01/15/2025 14:15:56
