Framing Light with a Narrow Aperture by Majdi Naser, PPSA, BPSA

July 2025 - Framing Light with a Narrow Aperture

About the Image(s)

At sunset in Calhan, I didn’t just capture the scene — I sculpted it. Using a 16-stop ND filter and f/22, I slowed down time and let the sun bloom into a perfect starburst.

Tip: Want to shoot directly into the sun without blowing your highlights?

Use a strong ND filter (like ND100000), narrow your aperture, and compose carefully.

The result? Stillness. Sharpness. And a sky that sings.

Camera: Nikon Z 7II
Lens: 14-24mm f/2.8G
Focal Length: 14mm
Aperture (FNumber): f/22 — perfect for creating that starburst effect
Exposure Time (Shutter Speed): 1/80 sec
ISO: 400

Well done. Surprised shutter is so slow with the ND filter. You got what you imagined.   Posted: 07/14/2025 08:52:44

Thank you! Yes, the 16-stop ND really slows things down, even at sunset. I had to balance it carefully with ISO and aperture.
I'm grateful it turned out just as I envisioned. It's always rewarding when the gear and the light work together.   Posted: 07/14/2025 11:56:08

I love the sun - great job! It is in a good position in the photo. After spending some time with it, I notice the wandering road that leads meanderingly to the sun.   Posted: 07/16/2025 13:18:28
