Devil through the Trees by Paul Halphen

January 2026 - Devil through the Trees

About the Image(s)

Photo was shot at Devil's Tower in Wyoming. Devil's Tower was the focal point of a 1977 science fiction movie called "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", directed and produced by Steven Spielberg. It received 9 Academy Award nominations, winning two.

This was shot from the camping area which is below the level of the small plateau from which the tower protrudes. It was shot with an Olympus OM-D E-M1X, with an Olympus 40-150 mm f/2.8 PRO lens at 43mm (86mm full frame), set at f/16 for high depth-of-field, so the leaves and the tower would both be in good focus. Shutter speed was 1/80 sec and ISO was 320. No exposure compensation was applied. Pattern metering was used to set the exposure for the scene as a whole. Auto white balance was adequate for the scene and lighting. Processing was very minimal, and done on the jpg file rather than the raw file.

I have been here and tried to get a good photo. Somehow there are always the backs of tourists or cars in the picture or the Devil is so far away it is only a blip in the photo. So I have a lot of respect for this photo, because it is lacking the tourist component.
The tree frames nicely this natural structure. What I also appreciate about it is the clarity and detail of the photo. It is *all* in focus. Nice job!   Posted: 01/06/2026 14:02:06
