About the Image(s)

This was taken in February during our cruise in the Caribbean area. Win the US, we had visited Cape Canaveral (where we really enjoyed an 8 hour trip to the Space Centre), one day at Miami (where we had a Jet boat experience then walked within the city) and two days in New Orleans (foggy and wet day 1, but enjoyed exploring the French and Garden quarters).

Miami seems to be a very cosmopolitan city - certainly the basin had on a Saturday afternoon many people showing off their boats (of all sizes and not mentioning that there seemed no control over music levels!). We did enjoyed our walk past the Ferris wheel and leftwards, walking back to the ship.

I took this image from our ship by a pano using my phone. The original here is after tweaking it with Apple auto edit within the phone. Upon adding it to Lightroom, I cropped it smaller, in particular to take some of the uninteresting bottom and side areas out and converted to mono. I tried to lift the shadows to bring more detail in the middle ground areas, then finally dealt with the noise.

Settings: After under-exposing by 2/3 stop, 1/30 at f1.8, ISO 1,250.

Adrian, this is an excellent panorama image of this skyline and the structure in the foreground create some interest. I believe your choice to convert it in monochrome was the right one because the dark sky do not allow to have a good separation and contrast with the buildings. All together I really like your work. I am not sure if panorama images can qualify for travel competitions.

Nice capture, Adrian. While the image in color is quite good, I can see why you wanted to try it in mono. Actually, I think it's effective as shown but I'd love to see it w/the contrast pumped up just a bit.   Posted: 04/15/2024 01:02:08

Sherry - Here I have selected just the city area with the wheel and not the sky, then boosted contrast via Clarity. I thought I wouldn't do this for the foreground area to take the eye up. Thoughts? Thank you for your suggestion!   Posted: 04/15/2024 10:32:21

Maybe I really do need new glasses as I am not seeing the difference between what's included and what's not. Yikes, so sorry!   Posted: 04/15/2024 16:58:41

OK - may be my fault: I'm not good at taking sliders way to the right, then bring back again after going too far! I've maxed the contrast slider this time! Any difference?   Posted: 04/16/2024 11:40:01

Adrian, it's my old eyes/brain that were the problem, not yours! I thought you meant that you had cropped the photo and upped the contrast. I couldn't find any evidence of it having been cropped. That being said, I think the contrast looks terrific.   Posted: 04/16/2024 11:44:10

Adrian, I think your second one shows the increased contrast (I have downloaded both and open the side by side). I think this second image is better. One thing I did not notice at first, is that the building on the right are slightly tilting to the left. You may try to correct it because the one on the right are not that way.

Thank you Michele - I appreciate your time looking and will try to attend to the right area.   Posted: 04/20/2024 07:25:26

Adrian, I concur that the second image is better. For me, the stuff in the foreground is confusing and distracts from the lovely panorama of the skyline. Have you considered cropping the photo to an even more panoramic view, cutting off most of the foreground stuff?   Posted: 04/25/2024 17:51:10

I accept the lower part isn't great - but it would more odd as a v narrow letterbox.   Posted: 04/26/2024 01:16:04

I like the image the way it was taken and I think the mono conversion worked for an improved image. While the cruise terminal is a bit overwhelming, it is also a good foreground object and I am going with a plus. I like the Ferris Wheel in the mid ground and the skyline in the back. As a judge I personally would accept that the elements of this image are a unique place on the globe.   Posted: 04/27/2024 15:17:23
