About the Image(s)

These Chinelos dancers, in their very colorful costumes, were part of a parade for San Miguel Day in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. The festival is in honor of Saint Miguel the Archangel, the patron saint of the town. The dance, which developed after the Spanish conquest, mocks the Europeans, with their fine clothing, beards, fair skin and mannerisms.

The auxiliary photo shows close ups of some of the dancers.

Sony a6400 camera (APS-C) at 26mm (49mm equivalent), 1/25” (rather slow shutter speed to show slight movement of the dancers), f/22, ISO 200. Minimal point-processing, just a bit of Topaz Sharpen AI.

Hi Nancy, this is definitively a travel image. To me the images is put down by the lack of sharpness due to the motion. I see you have shot 1/25" with the intent to show the movement of the dancer, but then you have used Topaz to sharpen the image. I am not sure you reached your intent. Maybe a slower shutter speed would have been more effective in the providing the idea of the movement.

Kind regards

The image perfect for travel session, very colourful, good depth, nice emotional impact.

But I couldnt understand if the auxiliary image is sharp, which is the close up of the artist then why not the the main group image. An image not in focus spoils the show.

If showing movements, using slow shutter speed was the intention, then it should have been captured with much slower speed, I feel.   Posted: 04/14/2024 23:59:56

Good capture of a colorful and meaningful travel moment, Nancy. As others have mentioned, the images were a bit blurry. I think that the smaller image is more effective than the larger one because we know where to look. To make the larger one more effective, perhaps you might crop off the guy in black on the right, the guy in purple on the left, and the bottom (up to about knee height), so you get rid of the pavement. I don't know if it would work but if it were my photo, I'd give it a try.   Posted: 04/15/2024 00:56:45

Hi Nancy. I like the vibrancy of your main image (which is definitely a travel one) but I feel you attempted to be too arty in trying to show movement. I don't think that works within Travel. A sharp version of this would be ideal, with colours everywhere - ideally, I would prefer a wider view to include all the plumes of the one in yellow (even if you then cropped the wider view down to this width).

The extra image is interesting and thanks for including it. It may not have been your intention, but I think there is a risk that judges (within Travel) may not like such a close up, as it could have been taken anywhere (inside or out).   Posted: 04/15/2024 11:09:41

Thank you all for your comments. Topaz Sharpen was used only to sharpen some of the slightly blurred faces; I left the hands, bodies etc. alone. I didn't want to slow the shutter speed even more for fear of muddying up the photo; a subtle amount of movement was all I wanted to render the photo more dynamic, and to step away from submitting an in-focus but rather conventional photo such as the auxiliary one. Adrian: Thank you for your incisive comment. You are correct that I wanted to make the photo somewhat "arty." I do my best to avoid conventional, boring photos - the notorious "post card"- type photos that - I believe - we all try to eschew.   Posted: 04/16/2024 21:43:18

Hi Nancy, while I appreciate your attempt to get a "arty non conventional image", I remain of the opinion that unfortunately your goal is not reached. Sorry!

I feel I want to see the faces of the dancers or at least the most prominent ones clearly and to me that is more important than showing motion. The colors are wonderful and the story is great. This is a great city to visit, we were there in 2019 and I will always appreciate that we experienced it.   Posted: 04/27/2024 15:08:38
