Place Royale, Bordeaux, France by Sherry Weinstein

April 2024 - Place Royale, Bordeaux, France

About the Image(s)

This was taken in Bordeaux, France at the Place Royale. It was raining, so the grounds were quite wet and allowed for nice reflections.

Image info: Canon EOS 70D; 16mm; f/4.5; 1/13 sec; ISO 1250; no flash.

This is nice capture of this iconic square. I think the image is sharp and has a good balance between highlights and shadows. I think the impression is that the image is tilted to the right. It can be just because of the wide angle you used, but this is the impression the viewer has. I also think that the image would be stronger if you could move to a more central position to enhance the symmetry.

best wishes

Nice night photography., An image is sharp. The use of rain water for capturing reflection is superb, It added beauty to the photo.

Agreed with Michele's suggestion of correction of tilting & symmetry   Posted: 04/15/2024 00:06:37

Very nice capture, enhanced significantly by the reflection off the wet surfaces.

I think we have to assume you were unable to take the image standing to the right of where you were, so perhaps a perfectly symmetrical view of this isn't possible. But this issue does not ruin your image to me.   Posted: 04/15/2024 10:57:24

You're correct, Adrian. There was a large area of pavement roped off. Sometimes, though, I deliberately position myself so that images are asymmetrical, as that can provide a little more interest.   Posted: 04/15/2024 16:48:29

Hi Sherry, I understand you want to make the image asymmetrical, but still is tilted to the right and I think this would be negatively affect its evaluation.

Kind regards

You're likely correct on that Michele. I hope to be back there soon and will see if I can do better;^))

Sherry, I agree with others that the image seems tilted. I believe a shot like this would be much stronger if better centered, if that is possible to do. That said, the image is well-constructed and the reflection is very well-done.   Posted: 04/25/2024 17:55:23

Taken from the left, the image has a perspective distortion which is acceptable to me, but it also has a slight tip. This can be easily fixed with a crop. The image is beautiful and is significantly enhanced by the reflection. Generally the symetric image would be desired and sometimes it is best to get far from it to make it not an issue. Perhaps go farther to the left, give up the left wing and concentrate on just the center part and the right wing. I don't know how this would work, but it might.   Posted: 04/27/2024 15:27:45

Thank you, Nancy, Stan, and other members of our group for your comments and suggestions. While we usually don't get to do travel photos again, I do hope to be back there in a few months and will take all the suggestions I received for a proper do-over. Got my fingers crossed;^))   Posted: 04/27/2024 17:21:56
