About the Image(s)

This photo was taken early one morning in Marseilles, as the fishing boats and their owners started selling their morning catch. While it was interesting to watch many of them, seeing this woman w/the cigarette hanging out of her mouth, she was all business.

This image is pretty much as captured, except for significant cropping and a little lighting.
Canon 50D; 18mm; f/3.5; 1/500 sec; ISO 160; Exp -0.3; No flash.

Nice candid action shot. The image is very sharp. Cigarette in the mouth while working speaks about her tough character. Her black dress at light b/g makes the sub prominent. Good image   Posted: 06/05/2024 00:08:50

Thank you, Vinaya. You're so right about the tough character. It's written all over her presence.   Posted: 06/05/2024 00:39:03

Sherry, this is a very nice portrait. Your crop from the original image is spot on and the photo capture well the character of the woman. I am not sure if this image would qualify for travel photography since it misses elements that can place this scenery in a specific geographic area. I think it is for sure a great example of "street photo" however.

Best wishes

Thank you, Michele. Interestingly, I have used this photo - taken in Marseille - for PT several times and did well w/it. But I can certainly understand your comment about it not being in a specific geographic area. Guess I'll have to consider that before submitting it into PT in the future;^))   Posted: 06/18/2024 00:24:15

Sherry - your image is fine for PTD. Anyone who knows that specific area can identify where that is - so the buildings at the rear are unique and identifiable. In addition, the PTD Definition includes the phrase……." although it is not necessary that the image identify the exact location".
I too have had similar images Accepted.   Posted: 06/21/2024 16:30:43

Sherry, this is a well timed shot from a fish market which so often provides characters which this certainly demonstrates. Your crop is perfect, getting right into the action. Nice shot.   Posted: 06/21/2024 13:02:05

Thank you, Adrian. As far as the shot being well-timed, it so often happens that we're just in the right place at the right moment and are able to get the shot. So much luck involved, for which I'm grateful;^))   Posted: 06/21/2024 15:49:34

Sherry, This is an excellent portrait of a woman who seems like a real character! I kind of wish the buildings in the background were not so prominent, but there clearly was nothing you could have done about it. At f/3.5, you probably couldn't 't have narrowed the depth of field...   Posted: 06/27/2024 12:28:44

Thank you, Nancy. I agree that this woman's attitude comes across loud and clear. The buildings, though, are obtrusive as you suggested. If I ever use this image - this woman, actually - for another category, I would surely try to minimize the impact of the buildings;^))   Posted: 06/27/2024 13:37:12
