About the Image(s)

This image is from the rodeo in Fort Worth Texas. Bull riding is the most dangerous event in the sport. You need to stay on for 8 seconds to get points and your free hand can not touch the bull. This guy didn't make it. When this happens it is the job of the two clowns in the arena to distract the bull and keep it away from the rider. I took the picture with a Canon EOS R5 with a 24-105mm lens at 105mm. I had to have a shutter speed fast enough to stop the action but the lighting wasn't great so I had to use a high ISO. I took it at f/4, 1/250, with an ISO of 2500 so it is a bit grainy.

Certainly fills all the requirements of the travel definition. I believe, most importantly, this image tells an exciting story which should stimulate the imagination of most viewers. I also like the focus and color but find the picture could use some selective brightening of the principals.   Posted: 05/10/2021 20:07:15

Excellent stopping of the action and capture of a decisive moment, but I wish the central characters stood out a bit more from the background (fence, spectators). Perhaps, as Les suggested, selective brightening of the principals would help? Or selective focus?   Posted: 05/25/2021 14:30:23

Certainly portrays the wild west, first rate PT image.   Posted: 05/25/2021 15:54:35

Definitely caught all aspects of the action. The onlookers of the "pit crew", the bull rider accepting defeat and going down, the rodeo clowns readying for full on brute action coming at them and of course the bull in a massive display of power with his hind legs clear up in the air. Literally felt like you were in the picture.   Posted: 05/25/2021 16:37:35

Les is right. Selective brightening, particularly of the faces would help. Unfortunately, it would be hard to get much space between the action and the fence. They don't get much further than that from the gate in bull riding.   Posted: 05/27/2021 14:25:33

Sorry I'm late here Dennis

Well done in taking this image, which certainly tells the horrific story of this "sport". As has been discussed, it's a busy image with much going on and therefore it's frustrating that the action is in shady conditions.

You may find that just lifting the shadows of the bottom half with a graduated filter will do the job well enough.

I like that you have kept the characters in the safe haven above the action - these add to the story with their hats etc. I didn't find any negative of you using a high ISO at all.   Posted: 05/29/2021 11:04:45
