Tokyo Prayer by Sherry Weinstein

July 2024 - Tokyo Prayer

About the Image(s)

This was taken at the Kaminarimon Gate in Asakusa, Tokyo. I particularly appreciated his evident devotion, the smoke arising from his prayer stick, and the raindrops on his glasses. The weather, in this case, surely helped add to the mood. Thank you, Mother Nature (-:

Canon EOS 70D; 17mm; f/11; 1/250 sec; ISO 250; exp - 0.3.

Sherry, this is a great photo. I think the image conveys well the mood of the place and smoke and the sky add a lot to it.
Congratulations for getting such a strong photo.

Best

Sherry - your mono conversion here is ideal and perfect! Your low positioning helps to emphasise his devotion and include all in the shot easily. An image clearly taken by a photographer who thinks before taking the shot. Well done.   Posted: 07/19/2024 01:53:54

Sherry, a well planned and taken shot. The low view location assures us this was taken by a photographer, not a tourist and it is very effective.

In an exhibition some judges are going to suspect a setup, but I think they should give you the benefit of the doubt. You were just smart enough to get low and he was just reverent enough to ignore you.   Posted: 07/19/2024 11:07:50

Adrian and Stan, you both made me laugh about the low view. Actually, Stan knows how short I am. That being said, my vantage point was as a 5-foot woman looking up at a 6-foot man. Again, luck had everything to do w/the shot working out as it did. Thank you both, and thank you, Michele, for your thoughts and kind words.   Posted: 07/22/2024 19:29:03

Sherry, This is an excellent portrait, which nicely captures his devotion, the shrine, the smoke and, as you indicate, the raindrops on his glasses. The monochrome conversion works well. As another 5 footer, I had to laugh at your comment. I, too, find that being short sometimes leads to interesting compositions!   Posted: 07/30/2024 19:17:08
