Girls at Forbidden City, Beijing, China by Michele Borgarelli

August 2025 - Girls at Forbidden City, Beijing, China

About the Image(s)

Background: Photographing people wearing traditional clothing has become very popular over the past years in China. This trend began in 2003, aiming to revive traditional Han Chinese clothing. This movement has played a crucial role in popularizing Hanfu photography among young people, especially through social media platforms leading to a surge in interest. Users often post travel blogs and photos showcasing traditional attire, which has contributed to the growth of this cultural aspect of the Chinese life. The trend has become a staple for tourists, particularly internal tourism. Photographers specializing in ethnic dress photography have reported a significant increase in demand, especially during peak travel seasons. The rise of traditional clothing photography has positively impacted local economies, with many new photography businesses emerging to cater to this growing interest. It is estimated that this kind of photography is worth about 150 millions USD/year. Indeed, this business includes renting the costume, the dress up and obviously hiring a photographer.
If you go to China be ready to fight with these photographers when you visit the most popular places. Is everywhere. In few instances I had to give up trying to catch an image. This image was captured at the Forbidden city and shows two girls dressed with traditional costumes. In this case they used their phones to take selfies.

Technical data: Fujifilm GFX 100S with Fujinon 45-100 mm at 100 mm, f/11, 1/200 sec, ISO 200.

Post processing: image has been cropped to my 2:3 format and basic adjustments were done. Other of that the image is pretty much straight in the camera.

Gorgeous image Michele and fascinating story telling. It looks like a trip back in time except for their cell phones and little fans. I really like your positioning of the subjects and that the rich background is in focus.   Posted: 08/05/2025 16:16:56

150 million USD/year, OMG, truly huge. After changing the rules of photo travel session of salons by PSA, PSA has a site of sample photos which are arranged & not permissible for PT section. Many such photos are there in those sample photos.

Any way, your photo is interesting candid photo. The image is v sharp. The main subject i.e. 2 ladies are in interesting traditional attire. B/g is also equally interesting & sharp. I liked the warm tone of the photo too, Overall very good travel image   Posted: 08/07/2025 03:42:16

Thank you Vinaya, for your comment. As you realize this is not a stage image. It is a candid one, so it would fit in the PT features. Saying that, I am pretty sure in a couple of years the PT will disappear almost and people will pick up the other option "PTD World in Focus", since this is a more flexible and there is no risk images submitted to salon can be discarded because a judge think is a staged one.
I have stopped to submit images to Salon however, because I feel they are becoming simply a "money maker" mechanism. I understand they are leading to PSA recognition. I am now 2 stars recognition for Digital Color and Black and White session and I have enough acceptance to go for 3 stars. My issue is that to getting further, considering how many image would be necessary, it will cost about 500-800$ considering the rate of acceptance and the cost of the salon . I am wondering if PSA one day will revise this mechanism and will rethink the all process. From my side, after getting my 3 stars, I will stop there. On the other hand I will keeping my path for the portfolio recognition that to me is a more fair and balance process.

Just my 2 cents thought on Salons and actual system.

Best

I totally agree with you, Michele. FIAP has already discontinued PT section. it switched over to WIF section for all salons, PSA may also follow it, as you said. But frankly speaking I love to capture & see also, only candid photos. Candid photos have their own beauty.

I also planned & achieved EFIAP & PPSA & then stopped participating in salons, except for salons of the clubs, where I am a member. I am also more interested in portfolios & work on them.

All the best to you   Posted: 08/09/2025 23:47:24
