About the Image(s)

Aigues-Mortes is one of the most popular destinations in the Camargue region of southern France. Its name literally means "Dead Waters," a reference to the surrounding marshlands. This medieval fortified town is encircled by wetlands and has a rich historical connection to the Mediterranean coast.The image was taken during the golden hour. I walked around the town walls looking for an interesting viewpoint, as the trail that normally offers the best views was closed. In the end, I was drawn to this composition. The warm brown tones of the grass in the foreground echo the color of the ancient walls, while the green vegetation creates a pleasing contrast between the foreground and the fortifications. I also used the expansive blue sky both as negative space and to reinforce the impression of Aigues-Mortes as a historic first line of defense against invasions arriving from the sea.
