About the Image(s)
This image was taken at one of the Tshechu Festivals in Bhutan. It captures a moment from Sha Tsam, the Dance of the Four Stags, a sacred Bhutanese ritual performed to purify the space and dispel negative forces. The dancers wear elaborate masks, their presence conveying a sense of ritual and spiritual depth. Each masked figure represents one of the Four Dignities of Vajrayana Buddhism, embodying enlightened qualities drawn from the natural world: the confidence of the Tiger, the joyful energy of the Snow Lion, the wisdom of the Garuda, and the power and clarity of the Dragon. The dance celebrates the profound connection between nature and spirituality. The graceful posture of the dancers and the reverent presence of the masks invite the viewer to contemplate harmony with the natural world and the sacred energies it represents. The Dance of the Four Stags is related to other stag dances found in the Himalayas where similar themes of liberation and spiritual cleansing are present. Each variation carries its unique cultural significance while sharing common elements of symbolism and ritual.
