Street Lady by Dr Edward Goldenberg

October 2023 - Street Lady

About the Image(s)

This image was changed from color to monochrome. The image was flipped to place the lady in the lower left corner. She also was selectively manipulated to bring out her presence. This was taken in San Miguel Mexico. The camera was a Sony alpha 6500 at 105mm, f4, and 1/640 sec. Street Lady is an unfortunate example of the haves and have nots.

You have captured the essence of the social circumstances you wished to present. Street photography, with its monochrome images is, IMV, the real art of our hobby. At first viewing, I thought maybe you should have cropped the image to better center the woman, but on further review, I see leaving the doorway at full height actually enhances the description of the despair you wanted to convey.   Posted: 10/01/2023 07:02:18

Doc Ed, in Photo Travel it is not allowed to flip the image. Now, as far as the mage is concern, it is a good B&W interpretation. I am not sure if the lady's outfit displays any hints to a culture or to a place. The iems seen through the fence at the door do not help either.   Posted: 10/01/2023 11:24:30

Ed, I was unaware that PTD does not allow flipping, so thank you to Isaac for that information. As is, the composition is great, with the diminutive subject in the lower left corner next to the large imposing and prison-like doorway. My eye is drawn to the lighter part of her clothing- either that should be toned down and/or her face brightened a bit.   Posted: 10/01/2023 21:01:51

Flipping is a way to move pixels which is not permitted.   Posted: 10/06/2023 12:39:24

Ed, I like the subject matter of your image very much. I know you don't like to post process, but the histogram shows that the image is at least one stop underexposed. Maybe you aimed for that in order to give the image a somber appearance in view of the subject. I attached the histogram and I'm going to submit my pp version of it. Curiously, the shawl she wars over the shoulder showed some purple when I increase the brightness. It seems the b&w conversion was not complete for some reason.   Posted: 10/06/2023 12:48:30
