LASCAUX CAVES-LASCAUX, FRANCE by Alan Lichtenstein, QPSA

About the Image(s)

Discovered in the late 19th century these caves represent a plethora of prehistoric cave art estimated to be 15,000 years old. The actual cave itself is adorned with these images covering the walls and ceiling. The colors were obtained using raw materials were available in the environment and the animals are mostly herbivores with strangely, few images of predators. One can’t visit the actual cave as it is again closed off due to deterioration of the old paintings because of human visitation that caused fungus develop on the paintings that consequently had to be removed with great difficulty. To prevent further deterioration, the cave is closed. Now, one visits an exact reproduction of the cave, but pictures are prohibited even with phones because the images are light-sensitive, and even the light from the phone window can be detrimental even to the reproduced images and because groups have to keep moving, so there is no time to dally to snap a picture or two. After the tour, one enters a large hall with yet further reproductions of the cave art in the actual positions, where pictures are permitted. So, this image is of a reproduction of a reproduction. Even though, still exciting.

Alan, indeed very creative artist of the time, using raw materials available in the environment. I was reading about all the contamination threats that happened when the caves were open to the public, and after closed when air conditioning work was done, different types of fungus and mold were spread. Your presentation of the reproduction of a reproduction still tells the story.   Posted: 01/06/2025 16:23:30

Tom, were you referring to my image or that of the original, unknown artist? <G>   Posted: 01/06/2025 19:05:40

Alan,

I liked how you picked out the two adjoining areas, the darker one and the lighter one.   Posted: 01/07/2025 19:49:22

Thanks for the compliment. Despite the fact that this was a reproduction of a reproduction, it was displayed with the same angles that it would have appeared had we visited the actual cave. The paintings on the walls and ceiling were so numerous that I had to actually bend and twist to get as many as I could into the frame.   Posted: 01/08/2025 05:19:04

It is amazing how art has been used over millennia to document what was happening. There is a good book Nexus which traces communication over the centuries to AI   Posted: 01/17/2025 17:29:31
