Halong Bay Shrimpers by Tom Tauber, APSA, MPSA

June 2025 - Halong Bay Shrimpers

About the Image(s)

Nikon D200, Nikon 12-35mm @ 15mm, 1/160 sec, f/7.1, ISO 500

Many years ago, I visited Northern Vietnam on my own and searched Google for images of Halong Bay beforehand. In addition to the well-known pictures of the carst islands, the tourist junks with red sails, etc. I found images that looked like this one. When I got there, I showed them to a local who told me that they were taken at the fish market in Halong city. I found a motor cycle rider who took me there before sunrise. The scene of hundreds of boats bringing in their fresh catches as the sun was rising, was unforgettable.

This image says much for independent travel. Yo user your own time and visit the site when you capture the image that you want. Here, you have an image that captures the setting-up for the day. You positioned yourself well to capture the series of junks. You don't say how you metered this image, but IMV, the sky and the mountains in the background are somewhat washed out and could have been possibly darkened with better metering or perhaps a graduated ND filter. the image doesn't appear to be back- lighted, so I assume the sun was behind your shoulder. This image is a testament to your innate understanding of composition.   Posted: 06/03/2025 06:23:53

Very nice travel image. Superb light of golden hour, good composition, sharp subject. I agree with Alan that darken b/g ( which is possible at PP too) will add the beauty to the frame.

Is this a cropped image? as with 15mm & f7.1 I wonder how come the 2nd boat at b/g came out so sharp? was the photo captured from distanced & then cropped?   Posted: 06/06/2025 08:16:52

I liked how the light brings immediate focus on the first boat although the remainder of the image is in focus.   Posted: 06/07/2025 10:58:19

Tom, Hạ Long Bay or Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and popular travel destination in Quảng Ninh province, Vietnam. The name Hạ Long means "descending dragon". It is a must to visit when you go to Vietnam. The early golden light illumination of the two women in the front makes this image. I did work on it a little with Dehaze and light to the shadows to bring out color and detail in the background which indeed looked slightly washed out. Interesting additional fact there are the fishermen's floating villages.   Posted: 06/07/2025 14:32:06
