September 2025 - Polish Festival Philadelphia 2025

About the Image(s)

Sony A1, Sony FE 24-105mm @ 24mm, 1/500 sec, f/5.0, ISO 5000, shutter priority

Philadelphia has a large ethnic community, including Polish, Italian, German, Ukrainian, Chinese and others. Every year the Polish community celebrates its heritage with a festival attended by thousands of people. The program includes native dances, folkloric music and of course Polish food. I have had some trouble with my A1 camera and used this opportunity to shoot with shutter priority which I rarely do. The fact that the A1 has very low noise even at 5000 ISO made it possible to use a shutter speed of 1/500 to almost completely freeze the action. I overlooked the amp sticking out into the right corner.

Tom, as an adherent of cropping until you drop, shame on you for missing the amp at the lower right <G>. Regardless, the image is well exposed and you captured the main story of the dancers. This is a good use of the rule of thirds, putting the focused dancers in the left while capturing the rest of the dances in the right. As a final comment, I thought you had your a-1serviced?   Posted: 09/05/2025 10:23:07

In April 2024 in Spain, I stumbled over a rock as it got dark and the A1 violently hit the ground. The lens got damaged - no autofocus. I just bought a new one and everything is working fine.   Posted: 09/05/2025 14:20:41

So, was this image with your new a-1? If so, how come you chose shutter priority for this image?   Posted: 09/06/2025 07:43:03

Tom, have you ever tried completely MANUAL with AUTO ISO and you pick your speed and f/stop to your needs. You can set up a Max ISO the camera can go. I do it all the time.   Posted: 09/11/2025 08:30:37

In candid shots, cropping up something unwanted is v common.

Overall image is good, capturing action & mood. Such action photos look good with slower shutter speed too   Posted: 09/07/2025 04:29:04

Tom, I like this image. It gives you sense of motion with no blur. Very colorful outfits. Nicely composed   Posted: 09/11/2025 08:32:56
