Also known as the Dark Fortress or Dark Castles, being a true wonder of nature. It consists of huge lava rock formation. Located near Lake Myvatn in North Iceland. It is filled with towering rock pillars, caves and arches resembling the ruins of an ancient city.
The main image shows the area for the visitors, where most of the people like to hike to the big window on the lava wall. The original shows another area of the site.
Both images were created with the Nikon D4 and the Nikkor zoom lens 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 @ 28 mm and these settings: ISO 640, f/8. The image was PP in LightRoom and cropped

This is an impressive landscape image. Colors are crisp, in particular the blue of the sky, everything is in focus, the image itself well-centered. A nice image.   Posted: 10/04/2026 19:04:30

Good image. The cloud pattern adds to its beauty. Including the hikers highlights the gigantic scale of the rocks and the ruggedness of the terrain.
In the original image, I would have preferred a crop from the top, eliminating the sky. This would give more emphasis to the rocks and hikers.   Posted: 10/06/2026 08:40:49

Don't see any hikers in the main image. Perhaps my eye sight is not what it used to be.   Posted: 10/09/2026 14:45:02

We are now supposed to comment on whether an image is ok for PTDD (documentary) or PTDW (World in Focus). I think the main time is PTDW because the PTDD definition requires the landscape to have distinct features which the image does not quit meet.   Posted: 10/09/2026 14:47:05

Note to all: the images were posted reversed. The main image should be the one with the big hole/window (landscape with distinct features)which also shows the hikers and people standing on the hole. Oh well......   Posted: 10/10/2026 10:27:52

We all make mistakes. The one you posted is still good image. I suppose I didn't pay as much attention to your description as Tom did.   Posted: 10/12/2026 18:11:02
