Heleconia with White necked Jacobin by Raj Panandiker

June 2025 - Heleconia with White necked Jacobin

About the Image(s)

Hummingbird ready to feed at the Heleconia flower. - a favorite feeding location for many hummingbirds.
This image was shot with Canon R5 Mark 2/RF100-300mm lens with a 1.4x converter,
shot at 420mm, at1/3000 sec f/4.0 , auto ISO (16000).
The image is denoised with DxO.
It was early in the morning and light was poor. I wanted to freeze the action. Despite the high shutter speed, I could freeze the wings only at extreme wing positions. I have several images in this sequence with one of them with the wings pulled to the back.

Beautiful hummingbird image but IMHO I think the bird is competing with the flower for attention and the flower is winning. I played around with different crops and I think there are some that would emphasize the hummingbird more.   Posted: 06/13/2025 20:16:04

I had the same thought when I was looking at the image. These heleconias are so pretty but so bright. I had already darkened the flower. I darkened it even more and did a 4x3 crop. See attached.   Posted: 06/13/2025 22:30:14

Raj, lovely image, great freeze, prefect DOF and exposure. I absolutely agree with the second crop and darkening the flower.

well executed shot. Nice Sharp ..especially its head and eye..the details on its iridescent blue head and green body are well-rendered.
While the bird is excellent the flower seems to little flat. Nice Work.   Posted: 06/21/2025 18:02:41
