Reddish Egret Canopy Hunting by Richard Distlerath

September 2025 - Reddish Egret Canopy Hunting

About the Image(s)

The image was captured in the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in August. We were driving the the Black Point Wildlife Drive when we spotted this rare reddish egret (aka red heron) hunting in the water. We jumped out of the car. I had my OM1 Mark2 with 150-400 mm f4.5 1.25TC lens set at 356mm. My camera settings wer shutter 1/1250 sec, f5 and iso 200.
I want this photo to conform to the standards for the nature division. I have keep processing to a minimum.
We were very lucky to see this bird run, splash water and display its classic canopy feeding.
Any ideas on how to improve this image?

Thank you,
Richard

WOW. I love the wing position and the light on the face. There is some motion blur on the head owing to shutter speed. Big thing is to straighten the horizon and you might bring down the highlights in the grasses a bit.   Posted: 09/09/2025 00:22:33

You are right! I posted the wrong image! Below is what I intended with a straight horizon. Yes I do wish I had a pinch faster shutter speed. I appreciate your help in pointing out processing and capture improvements.   Posted: 09/09/2025 05:19:26

Love this one too. I would lessen the blue out of the shadow and water.   Posted: 09/09/2025 08:11:26
