Pale Chanting Goshawk by Richard Distlerath

October 2025 - Pale Chanting Goshawk

About the Image(s)

This image was taken in Madikwe, South Arfrica on June 17. It was winter there and the photo was captured at 6:50 am before the sun had risen. The capture was taken with the OM1 Mark2 with 40-150 f2.8 at 150 mm. I used spot metering and pushed the exposure value up 1.3 EV. Shutter was 1/125 sec, f2.8 and iso 1250. The pale chanting goshawk is a bird of prey and hunts from high perches like at the top of trees. Image was processed in LR to show actual colors of the goshawk.

Thank you,
Richard

A slightly tighter crop from the bottom could emphasize the bird's gaze and create a stronger focal pull. There is catchlight on the bird's eyes. The red beak, legs, and eye pop dramatically against the muted greys and greens, creating a vivid color story. Golden Hours did it's trick .
