Great-tailed Grackle by Debbie Porter

April 2026 - Great-tailed Grackle

About the Image(s)

Great-tailed Grackle image taken in San Diego. I liked the light behind the grackle and
deliberately included it because it mimicked the grackle's eye. Does the light enhance the image or distract?

Debbie, this is a really nice portrait that brings out the subtlety in the iridescent feathers. I feel strongly that the light enhances the image, and in any case I don't see how you could have cropped it out?

The bird feels a bit cramped in the frame. Depending on the details of the parts that were cropped out, I would consider adding more space - mainly in front of the bird. I might also flip it horizontally, though I am less sure about that.

I also like the light, and agree with a bit more space in front of the bird   Posted: 04/15/2026 10:46:25
