Arriving Home by Richard Distlerath

June 2026 - Arriving Home

About the Image(s)

This image was captured in the Florida Everglades on February 3, 2026. I was standing underneath this tree when the woodpecker arrived home. I turned my camera upwards took a few images. My OM1 Mark 2 was equiped with 150-400 mm lens at 400mm. 1/3200 sec, f8 and iso 1600. The image was imported into LR and process with camera standard profile. Highlights were reduced and image cropped slightly. I like the point of view for this image.

Thank you,
Richard

Lovely image. I do think it is still a bit overexposed, and I would bring the highlights down further on the woodpecker near its tail and wing tips, as well as on the tree.   Posted: 06/13/2026 06:27:03

Yes I think I understand that altgouh nothing was clipped, you'd prefer a lower tonal value of the places you mentioned. Is I reprocessed and lowered the tonal value (highlights). Yes I see the photo may be better balanced. That is a good learning. Thank you!   Posted: 06/13/2026 12:52:59

Shooting bird high in a tree is a challenge, one that I have never mastered. This is image is exposed well and the eye is critically sharp. The tail feathers are acceptably sharp. The bird is positioned by the hole, a nesting hole I assume, which adds to the story.

In this image your capture the story well though it lacks the intimacy of an eye level shoot.   Posted: 06/13/2026 11:57:11

True! The unique perspective is not at eye level.
