Sunbird Take-off by Raj Panandiker

September 2024 - Sunbird Take-off

About the Image(s)

This image was captured in India. Sunbirds are found in most of the wooded areas there. These birds are small…slightly bigger than humming birds and just as unpredictable. They prefer some flowers over others. So, the strategy I used was to focus on a flower and wait….

Details
Technical Details: Canon R3 with RF 100-500 F4.5-6.7 lens
Shot at 500mm 1/1500 sec f/6.7; ISO1250
Matrix metering.
The image is cropped, processed in LR to bring out the contrast and sharpened in Topaz.

Nice image . Would have preferred a brighter one. Perfect timing. I can also see the catchlight in the birds eyes.   Posted: 09/07/2024 16:21:19

Great composition. I have to say I am distracted by the blurriness of the left shoulder. I myself do not have patience to shoot hummingbirds or any fast small birds.   Posted: 09/08/2024 20:24:03

I think that the uniqueness of the composition and subject matter will compensate for distracting elements, and you will gain acceptances for this image in competition. It's a difficult bird to photograph and you got the head very sharp while it is flying toward the viewer.

That said, I believe you could tone down the saturation and luminance of both the yellows and greens, preferably just in the BG, and/or reduce the exposure of the BG (but not too much) so the eye is not so readily pulled away to look at that bright yellow flower.

Nice composition. Great moment. I am a little distracted by the light spot on the left hand side of the flower stem.   Posted: 09/15/2024 11:07:29
