About the Image(s)
Camera R7 f6.3 1/1000 ISO 800 Lens Tamron 28-300mm 300mm
This was taken when we were in Custer State Park SD for the summer of 23. I had a willing subject who just sat there and let me practice on my DOF and composition. The bird was in an empty lot right outside the post office. My question is would this go in nature general seeing that it was taken in an urban environment?
In post I brought it into ACR and cropped way in still leaving it in Landscape. I lowered the highlights, shadows and whites. I upped the blacks. I did use point color to bring out the brown, yellow of the beak and seeds.

Lovely. I would crop in from the right to minimize the bright stem and brighten and sharpen the head a bit.   Posted: 12/11/2024 18:19:35

Thank you for the feedback. I am not sure in my original I had the stem. I did crop in. I am not sure what I would do on the heed.   Posted: 12/20/2024 17:24:17

Darcy,
This is a really nice image. I think it's one of the best I've seen from you!
I feel it could be even stronger with some minor tweaks. Here I started with your original, selected the bird and twiddled with Exposure/ Blacks/ Shadows/ Whites and Highlights - you can do a lot better starting with your original RAW file.
Then I "duplicate/inverted" my mask, subtracted the white of the seed pods and the mass of the flowerhead. I took down the Exposude, Blacks and Shadows of the BG, then moved the Tint a bit, and also reduced the saturation somewhat. Although that bright twig in the RL corner didn't bother me much, I tried selecting it and moving the various exposure sliders so it blends in better. I don't feel that cropping it out works, it's too tight on the bird. I did recrop to what feels like a more pleasing ratio for this particular subject. See what you think.
