This is a great behavior shot of a kingfisher. If possible, reduce the brightness of the neck and fish to see if you can pull out additional detail.

Unusual posture and nice colors add up to an attractive image. Any detail you can pull out of the white would be a nice upgrade.   Posted: 06/17/2025 15:29:56

Nice capture, and I think the motion blur works. I agree that the highlights appear to be blown out, not just where the whites are gone but overall.

If you have it, I would try cropping this into a horizontal image. The immediate reason is that the flow of your content is horizontal. The more cynical reason is that horizontal images are favored by the usual 1920x1080 ratio used in almost all international exhibitions.

Thanks Lilian, Great observations and suggestions as always. I shall try horizontal cropping. I have to dig through the collection to find out the original, a herculean task.   Posted: 06/27/2025 02:59:17

Hi Sajeev,
I love Kingfishers, but they are so fast and small and difficult to photograph. I agree with the comments about the whites being blown out. If you can fix it, great. Since hand of man is showing with the wire, you can only enter this in Color exhibits, not Nature. So you can cheat a bit if you have another similar image that is not blown out to clone in the highlights. I agree with Lillian that this would be better cropped horizonal.   Posted: 06/25/2025 10:07:58

FWIW, the new rules state that incidental HOM elements are allowed, and Wildlife has always included "adapted habitat." But you are correct that judges tend to score lower for images with heavy HOM influences.

Thank you Tom. I agree with your comments. It seems that these birds prefer to sit on wires if it is available.   Posted: 06/27/2025 03:03:06
