October 2025 - Roadrunner Heron
About the Image(s)
This "Roadrunner Heron" was taken at Montezuma Wildlife Refuge in New York. Fuji X-H2s with Fuji 500mm 5.6 lens at 1/1600th at f5.6 ISO 800. Denoised in LR. I think there are two images here. Another one with the heron on the right alone.

There is alot going on in this image and the herons blend into the background. I like the idea of just showing the heron on the right. I would also crop out the reflection. I love the pose and the title.   Posted: 10/12/2025 13:53:21

Tom,
I really like the action here! I feel that including both birds tells a much better story than either on its own (with or without the reflections, but it would be hard to crop those out and still maintain a pleasing ratio).
The birds are really hard to separate from the BG, however. I think you could help this in processing. It will take some effort, but if you select and mask the birds, warm them up a bit and work on the whites, shadows, clarity etc, you should be able to pull them out enough to make them pop without pushing the rules. You probably don't need to do anything to the BG - just leave it drab.
