Whistling duck trio by Graham Harris

September 2024 - Whistling duck trio

About the Image(s)

This is a crop from a larger image taken with a Sony A7RV using a 200-600mm lens at 600mm plus a 1.4 teleconverter. The ducks were quite some distance away on a pond at our local showground in late afternoon light. I used F14 to get a decent depth of field, 1/500s shutter speed and ISO800. – a tripod was used. Image was post-processed in Lightroom Classic (adjustments made to increase exposure, open up the shadows and pull back highlights). Image was cropped to focus in on these three ducks and then processed in Topaz Photo AI to minimise digital noise and sharpen the image.

The eyes are really striking compared to the whistling ducks we see in North and Central America. The detail for subjects at different distances is impressive. Was the golden hue of the water reflecting the surroundings or just from the low angle sunlight?   Posted: 09/07/2024 20:08:11

Thanks for the comment - the golden colour was primarily due to the low angle of the sun on this winter afternoon.   Posted: 09/08/2024 21:31:51

Graham,

This is a pleasant image overall. The group of three birds is a plus, and the subject is appropriately sharp and well exposed.

I feel the image overall has a yellow cast, and this may be primarily a result of the very bright yellow on the water behind the birds. It pulls my eye away from what should be the main focus - the birds themselves. I feel you can tamp down the yellow water without losing the attraction of the birds.

Nice and sharp with good detail. I agree that the bright yellow of the water competes with the birds.   Posted: 09/16/2024 22:05:06
