June 2025 - Green Heron
About the Image(s)
This image of a Green Heron was taken at a nearby pond. I watched him for quite a while. He first started on this stump above the water and then moved to the ground next to the pond. I never saw him successfully catch anything. What was interesting is that while he was hunting he made himself very small to not be noticed. When he got angry with a duck that came too close he stretched out his neck and body and seemed like a different bird.
Image was cropped, highlights and contrast adjusted in Photoshop.
1600 ISO, f7.1, 1/800

I love this. I can almost anticipate him getting ready to fly. I especially love the clarity of the claws. What camera did you use?   Posted: 06/17/2025 01:02:31

I really like the pose, the sharpness and exposure on the bird, and the lovely water in the BG. I agree with your crop because I feel that small knob on the snag adds to the story, and you have allowed enough space above for the bird not to feel cramped, and enough to the right for it to move into. I believe you would gain acceptances for this image in competition.

Nice and sharp with good color and detail. The bird looks a bit closed in and could use more breathing room.   Posted: 06/25/2025 10:47:53
