Reddish Egret by Syed Bughdadi

June 2025 - Reddish Egret

About the Image(s)

1/1000 sec, f/9, ISO 320, at 800mm. This was taken with Canon R5 with a RF 200-800mm lens.

In order to catch a fish the Reddish Egrets spread out their wings to cast a shadow on the water below. Small fishes are attracted to the shadow and move in the shadow.

The image was minimally post processed (lowered the highlights, increased the shadows a little, and cropped the image in LightRoom.

Great image. I also love the story about how they catch fish. Side note I can only think bad hair day.   Posted: 06/17/2025 01:17:11

Here is a bad 'hair day' portrait.   Posted: 06/18/2025 12:22:42

What a comical bird! It's a fun pose, but IMHO it doesn't really tell us much about the bird's life. Since it is looking up, one cannot tell that it is shading the water.

I also wonder if vertical is really the best option here? You have a lot of superfluous vegetation above/ behind the bird, and not much room for it to move into. Plus, overall it feels tipped to the right. If the original was actually horizontal, consider recropping at 4x3 or so to give it some room to move. I assume you have a number of other images of the bird, so look for some where he is more focused on the water so it becomes obvious feeding behavior.

Interesting pose. The bright kelp in the background does not help the image, it draws my eye away from the rather bland colored bird. I agree a horizontal crop with more room for it to fly into would help.   Posted: 06/25/2025 10:51:00
