Sea Otter by James Nelson

June 2025 - Sea Otter

About the Image(s)

Most of the times I have seen sea otters in deeper water, kelp beds exposed to the open ocean swells. In this case we were moving between the BC coast and a close island when we came upon a lone otter. He swam along parallel to the boat for a while. When the engine was cut, he did lazy laps around us for 30 minutes, sometimes as close as 30 yards. It was 2:30 in the afternoon with full sun so the lighting was pretty harsh.

Nikon Z9 400 mm, 1/2500 sec., ISO 64, f/2.8

I ran this image through DxO Mark but there was very little noise to remove and only slight sharpening. I made some white balance corrections, cropped and slight dehaze slider adjustment in Lightroom Classic before exporting. The original showed some front focus. I did a little targeted sharpening of his camera left eye and side of the head to even out the focus.

Cute image. I like the water detail. Do you have any more image on the left? The crop seems a little tight. I think it could be cropped more on the bottom.   Posted: 06/13/2025 20:38:50

I also love the water bubbles. Great eyes and the catching of the wet fur.   Posted: 06/17/2025 01:06:31

I love your low angle here, and the eye-level view of the otter. The water "pillow" helps tell a story. I agree it would feel more balanced with a bit more space on the left, and not quite as much on the right. I'm not sure there is enough story here to carry this image in competition but it's worth entering a couple of times to find out.

Nice and sharp with good color. Good sense of movement.   Posted: 06/25/2025 10:41:33
