Baby Elephant eating by Howard Frank

September 2024 - Baby Elephant eating

About the Image(s)

I captured this image in Kenya while on Safari. This baby elephant was wandering around with its mother enjoying the scrub. Taken with my Nikon D 500 and 80 to 400 lens at f/6.3, 1/6400th of a second, ISO 720 and minus 2/3rds of a stop EV. Processed with DXP Pure Raw 3 and Lightroom.

Baby's allways get an Awwww. The detail is very stark. Maybe expected from a bright, sunny day. I noticed the color difference leggs, side and lower tip of ear compared to the upper body. Almost looks like he may have been in the water recently. Sharpening looks a little aggressive but again maybe that is just the lighting.   Posted: 09/07/2024 20:38:40

I also agree with James when it comes to the sharpening. Is it possible to do something to bring out the eye? What steps did you do when you processed the image?   Posted: 09/08/2024 20:49:52

Very cute image. I probably would have cropped it a little more, especially on the bottom. Did you try masking the background and playing with the exposure and highlights? I think the brightness of the background may be distracting from the elephant.   Posted: 09/15/2024 11:43:20

Howard,

The image is appropriately exposed and I feel the subject is realistically sharp. Having photographed a lot of elephants, I actually feel you might have pulled up the eye a little too much, but if I were judging the image I doubt I would have noticed that. The processing does not otherwise appear excessive to my eye.

Unfortunately, I don't feel this is a competitive image for international exhibition purposes. It's a single animal not doing much. Although it is facing slightly toward the viewer, just being a young animal isn't enough to really pull us in. Other than sticking its trunk into its mouth, it isn't interacting with anything or another animal. Although you included a good bit of the environment. this doesn't provide enough story to help the image stand out from the crowd.
