December 2024 - Vermilion Flycatcher
About the Image(s)
This Vermilion Flycatcher is a rare visitor to San Diego. I watched him flit high up in the trees and noticed he would periodically flycatch down to this stump. The stump placed him close to eye level so I hung out by the stump hoping to get a picture of him perched there.

I am surprised you achieved such a nicely out of focus background at a relatively narrow aperture. The gradient from green to blue came makes a lovely background. Feather detail is very good. Pretty subject. Your patience paid off.   Posted: 12/10/2024 17:10:28

That's because there was nothing behind the stump and bird for about 150 feet.   Posted: 12/15/2024 14:24:44

Beautiful, subtle color. Makes it look almost like a watercolor painting.   Posted: 12/21/2024 12:12:47

Lovely image. What has not been pointed out is how the leading line of the stump guides the eye cleanly from the lower left corner, up to the bird then we follow the angle of the bird to the eye and bill pointed to the sky. The extra bit of stump fills in some dead space and balances the image nicely.
Red and green are of course complementary colors, which enhances the pictorial side of the image. I would enter it into PIDC as well as ND. (Different exhibitins, obv)
