January 2026 - Upland Geese Chicks w Papa

About the Image(s)

This is from a couple of years ago. Falkland Islands. I was enamored with the native geese, which are ubiquitous in the area. I spotted a pair with chicks in some lovely pampas grass and demanded to be let off the bus. I spent an hour with the family, attracting some looks as I alternately lay flat on the cold ground then got up to follow as they moved. The overcast light allowed shooting in every direction, but I would have liked some backlighting for some of the scenes.

Shutter speed: 1/1250 sec

Really cute, great storytelling shot. Good sharpness and detail. My eye gets a bit distracted by the bright layer on top. I wonder if darkening it would help.   Posted: 01/18/2026 13:37:50

Great story. I really love the angle of the shot with nice background separation. the bird is in sharp focus; good eye contact and nice management of contrast.

The bush behind the bird is sharp, but to my eye, the chicks, which are important part of the subject appear to be OOF. Bit surprised that f/11 did not produce the DOF.

dark eyes surrounded by dark feathers makes it hard to see detail n the little ones. The story of mother herding and watching over her brood adds a lot to the image impact.   Posted: 01/19/2026 18:00:03
