About the Image(s)

Nikon Z8 with Tamron 150-500mm at 500 mm, 1/320 sec. , f/6.7, ISO 160

There was very little action as this bird hunted the newly flooded wetland. I rarely see this species outside of the tall grass. The lighting was due to a late break in the clouds that allowed a natural light portrait.

Hi James,
The concept was good for your image. I took the liberty of taking it into photoshop and cropping, sharpening, relighting and darkening the background. I am curious as to your thoughts.   Posted: 01/18/2026 13:35:25

I agree that sharpening the subject would likely do better in competition. The other changes do separate the bird from the background. I tend to be more a photo journalist so my edits reflects the conditions at the time of the photo. In this case a bright, late evening light. Your editing is likely better as a submission. I appreciate the time you spent on this.   Posted: 01/19/2026 17:26:04

Cool concept. I like Howards's processing. it pops the bird much better.

Next time you shoot bird on the ground, i would suggest a low angle, almost close to the ground so as to make the background OOF.   Posted: 01/18/2026 22:13:22

Your point on lower angle is well taken. In this case, I was in a wildlife refuge and restricted to a trail along the top of a dike. The bird was 8 to 10 feet below me but I was not allowed to enter the wetland area.   Posted: 01/19/2026 17:28:42
