Fish Out of Water by Lillian Roberts, APSA, GMPSA/B

October 2025 - Fish Out of Water

About the Image(s)

This image will probably never do well in competition, in fact it is technically not allowed with the new rules, as it was created by feeding these fish!

They are fruit-eating fish that leap out of the water to snatch fruit and berries that dangle over the water. They are quite happy to leap for apples on a stick held above their resting area. You set up using flash, prefocus on the stick, and need to be quick when they jump! Loads of fun, but there isn't a lot of use for the image other than posting it here.

Shutter speed: 1/160 sec

Exposure mode: Manual
Exposure compensation: -1/2

Metering mode: Multi-segment

Nice moment!
How about cropping the image , especially from right side. Also, if background can be blurred using photo editing software?   Posted: 10/10/2025 21:06:39

Thanks for your input. I will consider cropping more. As a reminder it is not allowed to blur the BG artificially for Nature Division competition.

Fantastic Shot! I would love to try doing this. I need to check the Nature rules to see if there are any other changes this year.   Posted: 10/12/2025 14:48:52
