Challenging Sail by Carolyn Todd-Larson, PPSA, AFIAP

June 2025 - Challenging Sail

About the Image(s)

Caught these guys struggling to control their small sailboat in front of Rose Island, Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, near Newport. We were sailing quite a distance away on a large schooner and the wind was pretty good. I believe they were racing the boat behind them, that you can only see a bit of. I'm captivated by how the sailor's body is almost horizontal to the water while holding onto the lines to control the sails.

Camera: Sony RX10
Focal length: in 35 mm it was 424mm
Exposure: f/5.6; ISO 100; 1/800 sec

Adjusted in Lightroom and Nik Collection Color Effects Pro. Cropped significantly to get the sailboat closer in the photo.

Nice. It captures the adventure of sailing. The colors are pleasing. The background adds to the photo.   Posted: 06/21/2025 21:21:12

Hi Carolyn. This is a fine photo that is very difficult to capture, one really needs to have a boat as well. From a shore the distance to the action is too great add mist and spray photographic conditions almost impossible. I like the photo as it shows sporting action and the natural environment rather than the usual stadium events. Man, and nature not just other competitors. The second boat is virtually directly behind the leading vessel, often happens as leading boat is trying to steal second boats wind.   Posted: 06/22/2025 20:16:41

Carolyn - very interesting as I have been in the area. My wife grew up in Wickford and the last time we went back was probably 8 or more years ago.
Anyway - looking at the water, yup, they are having a bit of a challenge and you have captured the struggle.   Posted: 06/29/2025 17:56:17
