About the Image(s)

Why I took this image:
This is one of the first images I took with my first DSLR camera, a Canon D30. It was taken a a local track meet after I had moved back to Iowa, taken 7/29/2007.

Camera Settings:
N/A

Post processing:
Normal LR adjustments plus some cropping. Then used Nik Silver Efex Pro to convert to Black and White. The colors in the background were too distracting.

Hi John. From my first impression of the photo it appears out of focus and with camera settings N/A were you using a manual lens? I have used many manual lenses in sports movement shots and this is what can happen, it looks like your focal point was on the cyclone wire fence at the girl's rear. The point of release of the shot put is great, could not be better, B&W ok but it does takeaway any vibrant colours that maybe in the athletes uniforms.   Posted: 05/16/2022 18:06:34

This image appears soft on my desktop monitor, but it is okay on my mobile phone screen. B&W is good. The flying braids, the facial expression and the position of the shot are excellent. Too bad about her right foot.   Posted: 05/18/2022 15:55:30

She has great expression and has just released the shot. The focus is soft. It would be better to have her foot in the frame. But the expression and release of the ball are good.   Posted: 05/19/2022 03:31:47

I like the expression and the energy of this photo. How the ball is touching her outstretched fingers. The cutoff foot doesn't bother me. I'm focused on her effort.   Posted: 05/22/2022 18:25:28

With first DSLRs Sharpening was quite problematic. I have tested one or two. Yes, here the sharpening is on the net behind.

I agree with perfect face expression and timing of capture. Missing feet is a distraction for me. It would be better to make tighter crop at the end of right hand.

Background is too busy also in BW. You could selectively darken it.   Posted: 05/28/2022 14:39:24

You are not allowed to selectively darken the background in photojournalism.   Posted: 05/31/2022 15:12:49
