January 2025 - Showing Off
About the Image(s)
The interaction between dog and handler is fun to watch at an AKC dog show, especially when the handler is an earnest young girl!
Photographed with my Nikon D7100, 18-300 Nikon lens at 58mm focal length
1/125 at f/8, ISO 160.

I would have tried to capture a more wider view so as to include more of the surroundings with main subject emerging prominently. You seemed to have narrowed it to avoid distractions, but impact of the show is lost. You know there are ways to reduce or enhance impact of background.   Posted: 01/06/2025 00:52:48
I appreciate your point of view. For me, the entire story is the interaction between the girl and her dog, flowing together in motion, both hair and legs! The surroundings at a small outdoor dog show like this are truly distracting because it isn't a situation where there is a crowd that is watching this one event, and the random people standing and walking in other directions didn't contribute anything to the story. So yes, the crop to focus on this one pair of competitors is entirely intentional. :)   Posted: 01/06/2025 09:19:20
Nice motion shot. Love the flying fur and hair. Maybe crop to give a bit more behind the dog? Good color, good focus.   Posted: 01/06/2025 12:10:11
Nice. It is a good shot of the scenes at a dog show. The people in the upper left are a distraction. It would be better to pre-visualize the action. If you do have all of the woman with her back to the camera, it might be better to include all of her. Perhaps this is picky. If the photo were taken slightly before the girl merges with the spectators, it would be more of a success.
The photo of the girl and the dog is fine.   Posted: 01/23/2025 16:03:53

Thanks for your thoughts. I actually do have more of the setting in the scene at the top of the photo, including the woman with her back to the dog show, and I wasn't sure if it was more distracting to have other people in the background who were ignoring the action at the show or to crop them somewhat, since they are fairly blurred. This outdoor dog show was difficult to photograph without people and cars in the background, but it wasn't something where there was a crowd involved in watching the show, so I tried to concentrate on the girl and the dog. The second image I'm adding shows the original scene (although I did crop off some additional portion on the left side that was didn't add to the story).   Posted: 01/23/2025 16:41:41

Hi Ardeth, Welcome to the group. I do prefer the second photo with all of the woman in the upper left. But, John could be right.   Posted: 01/24/2025 14:36:21

I like the image you presented and I think it should win some acceptances.   Posted: 01/24/2025 11:00:10
Thanks so much, John!   Posted: 01/24/2025 17:37:19
Nice!!! Beautiful action shot of a junior handler at work. The look of concentration on her face is priceless. That afghan is almost as big as she is! I love that you clearly captured its flowing hair. It's difficult to get a really good shot at dog shows because of all of the activity going on all around you. You've done it well.   Posted: 01/27/2025 09:06:27
