June 2025 - In slumber

About the Image(s)

Location: A beach at one of the Andaman Islands
Tech Spec: Camera Nikon Z 6 III, Lens Nikon Z 85 mm f/1.8.
Aperture: f/6.3, shutter speed 1/10, ISO Auto, camera was hand held.
Light : Natural evening light on a bit cloudy day.

In November last my wife accompanied me to the Andaman Islands for a vacation. While strolling at one of the beaches we happened to see what I have shown in the image. When looked around, we saw a young couple making their selfies with their cell phone and paying no attention to what they had left behind. We took no time to understand that these belongings and the baby are theirs, but to us the situation was unpleasant. Leaving the baby in slumber and belongings at such a public place is risky. Anyone can steal the baby as well as belongings.
I made this shot with whatever lens I had on my camera, but later went to the couple to make them conscious of what they had done. We also made their photos too to make their trip memorable.
When I sat down to make a photo of the baby and their belongings, there was a little space behind me, but I wanted to include sea too with the lens which was already on my camera. I had to content myself with such a vertical shot otherwise I would have preferred a horizontal shot so as to include more of the surrounding area.
I downloaded the image and processed it in photoshop.

It is an unsettling story of an incident which could have turned out badly. Good for you to both call the parents' attention to the risk they took and then to also make a nice photo of them with your camera. I understand your desire to include the sea. I feel there is so much space at the top of the image that the child sort of gets lost, and the lack of space at the bottom makes the photo look a little imbalanced.   Posted: 06/07/2025 15:54:36

I agree more water could be cropped off the top to see the sleeping child better. I would also like more beach on both sides of the photo.
Personally, I don't find the scene disturbing. If the parents were nearby and keeping a eye, I don't see the danger. Perhaps in India it is different.   Posted: 06/07/2025 16:49:50

This just seems like a sleeping child to me. It doesn't feel dangerous or foreboding. It also feels oversaturated.   Posted: 06/07/2025 23:02:42

The sea behind the child gives a sense of foreboding. Good for you to talk to the parents, and give them a photo. Well done.   Posted: 06/12/2025 20:48:13

One more comment. The blues are a little strong. Perhaps tone them down and the foreboding feeling would go away.   Posted: 06/14/2025 18:09:08
