At the Black Pearl of La Paz by Leslie Larson

June 2025 - At the Black Pearl of La Paz

About the Image(s)

At the Black Pearl monument on the malecon in La Paz, Baja, CA people gather for selfies. This family caught my eye a few years ago.
Taken with Canon Rebel T3i, at f/16, 1/250, ISO 400, and 28mm.

I think you have done a nice job of showing the setting, with the inclusion of the palm tree and the beach huts in the background in a simple, uncluttered way, with the monument and the sun striking off of the pearl. For me, the story is a little confusing as to whether the main subject is the monument or the people. Although you were a bystander of another family's group shot, I think it would have been a stronger image if the faces of the people could be seen here, since there really isn't any action occurring.   Posted: 06/07/2025 16:01:48

Yeah, I guess a group hug isn't much action. I just liked the color...perhaps, more a travel shot than PJ. Also, I think ubiquitous selfies are too funny. I can't stand it when I get travel photos from friends and they are in every shot.   Posted: 06/07/2025 16:39:59

I agree with you about travel photos that ALL are "here I am with such-and-such," "here I am with something else," "here I am in front of blah-blah-blah"! I also don't understand the urge to photograph yourself-I am very happy to be behind the camera and not in front of it!   Posted: 06/07/2025 16:54:45

I'm more intrigued by the reflection in the pearl than the family. That part feels like a snapshot and not being able to see their faces really takes from it.   Posted: 06/07/2025 23:07:00

Agree with Jenny, my interest is also reflection in the pearl. You too seemed more interested in reflections in pearl than in the family who appear busy with themselves and not interested what's happening around. Whatever it is, you have made a good photo, a nice travel shot.   Posted: 06/08/2025 04:39:06

You are right, I'm not at all interested in the family...just the idea of a selfie in an iconic setting. The pearl is the subject. It attracts selfies like a magnet. People posing for selfies are always amusing to me.   Posted: 06/14/2025 18:07:14
