This is certainly a special moment to capture. I think the image would have been able to shine more if you could have waited until the lady with her back to you moved out of the way so she isn't the largest and most distinct part of the photo. I think you could have bumped up the ISO quite a bit so we could see more of the setting (on a boat?) and so the faces, especially of the birthday celebrant, were brighter.   Posted: 06/07/2025 16:05:12

Thanks. I was interested in capturing her taking the photo, but agree the most interesting part of the picture is the man and the electric sign.   Posted: 06/07/2025 22:54:42

You must have had a great time at that birthday celebration.

Still, a casual viewer would have no idea what is going on, plus we get more of someone's backside than is interesting. I agree with Ardeth's suggestions.
I'm old enough to remember the Monkees, but wouldn't recognize anyone from that rather mediocre (IMO) band.   Posted: 06/07/2025 17:00:25

I thought about cropping it closer but chose not to. A casual viewer should see a woman taking a photo of a person with an electric sign kneeling next to a man sitting on a chair, which is exactly what's going on. Whether you recognize Micky or not (or the band's alleged skill set) really shouldn't be relevant.   Posted: 06/07/2025 22:37:32

Of course you are right, it's not relevant to the photo whether or not I liked the Monkees. Just a comment about the times. The old saying "if you remember the 60's, you weren't there" was then, and is now, a stupid trope. Not everyone was stoned 24/7. But we were all listening to the music.
BTW, your cropped version is better.   Posted: 06/08/2025 10:40:19

Thanks. That's helpful. So cutting her in half wouldn't be a problem? I think she needs to be in the shot, but not the focal point.   Posted: 06/09/2025 22:22:05

Sorry, can't make out what's happening.   Posted: 06/08/2025 04:42:58

Great shot. The iconic Mickey Dolenz is clearly visible. I would try to get around the woman in front of you. She will likely get her photo, move back, and you will have a chance to get closer to Dolenz and the man holding the sign.
Perhaps you are right. it depends on the circumstances. Anyway, great going. Celebrity photography!   Posted: 06/12/2025 21:19:30
