Working for a yellow belt by Ardeth Carlson

May 2026 - Working for a yellow belt

About the Image(s)

My daughter and her daughter decided to take lessons at a local karate school, and it was pretty interesting to see them take each other on in trials for their yellow belt! The room lighting was not very bright, so I shot with a fairly low shutter speed of 1/60 and aperture of f/6.3, ISO 1000, and was fairly happy with the resultant exposure. I did include my husband and son in the frame as observers of the action.
This was an older Nikon 18-55 lens at 32 mm on my Nikon D7100; I'm not sure why I had that particular camera, but it was less obvious than my bigger lens on my D850!

Having read the description to better understand the image, to me the main subject stands out well, but my concern is distractions in the background.   Posted: 05/19/2026 17:42:04

The story is in the mother-daughter fight, which doesn't come through that well, unless with the caption. You could add them to the title perhaps.
Otherwise, the exposure and sharpness are good. You have a punch being thrown at the critical moment. Well done.   Posted: 05/20/2026 23:14:10
