The VELVEL ritual is a traditional piercing ritual from India where more the pain, more the sacrifice of the devotee as is perceived by the. They pierce themselves in the 102 degree Fahrenheit and walk the heated path barefooted. An insistent crowd cheers these ascetics loudly using the word VEL VEL which means divine javelin.

Tech details - Nikon D5 coupled with Sigma 35 mm. shot at f/4 to reduce depth, at 1/1250 to capture the moment, ISO 140 for minimising ISO clutter in matrix mode. shot manual without discharging flash.

The tight crop appeals. The piercing is the point of the photo. You could almost crop out the man on the left. It would leave less of the rod through his mouth, though. Still, very nice.   Posted: 05/19/2022 04:57:08

The pain is evident in the contestant's face. I would like to see this image not cropped so tight so I could see some of the crowd. In your description you mention the cheering of the crowd but the image does not show me any of that.   Posted: 05/26/2022 17:05:23
