So Much to Protest by Birgit Langmann

May 2025 - So Much to Protest

About the Image(s)

Canon Powershot SX20, ISO 125, 1/1244, f3.2, 5mm lens, hand held

I went to the April 19th protest in Anchorage. There is lots to protest from anti-kings, to pro-Palestinian, to pro-Europe, Canada, and Mexico, to women losing access to women's healthcare, to the defunding of Education, our National Parks and Monuments, and research. The current list is rather long. According to our local news, there were about 3000 protesters in Anchorage, with lots of smaller ones across the state from Utquiagvik (Barrow) and Fairbanks in the north, Bethel and Nome in the west, Juneau and Sitka in the south. And lots of small villages in the middle.

If you live in the US, there is another national protest on May 1st against project 2025.

Hi Birgit. Looks like rallies and protests are everywhere in America now. This image helps to show the size of the crowd and some of the signs citing the issues. The flag and red/white/blue lettering identify it as America. A protest is about the issues and the people. In this situation, I would move around and try to get people's faces possibly with some emotion. Karl   Posted: 05/04/2025 11:17:47

I am a bit leery of posting people's faces. With people disappearing after protests in other places I don't want to potentially endanger anyone as 'homegrowns' can also be picked up and held without due process.

I agree that it would have more impact to show people's faces.   Posted: 05/09/2025 23:24:09

You raise an interesting point about fear of retribution. If people do not have the courage to oppose the dangerous changes being tried, then we are destined to go down the slippery slope into inhumanity that's documented in history.
In retrospect, I appreciate the protest organizer who pulled me away from engaging with an anti-protester years age in Washington, DC. Now many protest leaders tell their people repeatedly to shout your message but don't directly engage with people of a different viewpoint. There is also the fact that there are now plenty of cops around organized/permitted protests. And let's hope the current anti-constitution government doesn't do away with the first amendment.
As far as photography is concerned, I don't do any social media, only established print media and photography venues. It's still permissible to photograph others in public spaces.   Posted: 05/10/2025 10:14:49
