Hands Off by Karl Leck

May 2025 - Hands Off

About the Image(s)

I attended one of the 1200 Hands Off! protests in April. This image was made along Main Street in Newark, Delaware, home to the University of Delaware. Of the several protests within driving distance, I chose Newark because I know the area well and expected a good turnout of college people. I wasn't disappointed. This is a slightly cropped wide angle image. As the saying goes, "If you are not in the middle of the activity, you are not close enough."

Technical data: Nikon Z7 with Nikkor 24-120 mm f/4S lens at 24 mm. ISO 400, 1/125 second, f/10 on overcast day.

Side note: Main Street gained infamy this week when a van being chased by police hit and killed a person, injured others and damaged cars parked along the street. The Newark Camera Shop where I bought most of my photography gear for years is along the path of the incident. The good news (safety) and bad news (no photo op) is that I wasn't in Newark at the time.

I feel that I am in the middle of the protestors about to be run over. The anger is clear from the facial expressions and the signs tell me the cause.

Please refer to my comments on Birgit's image.

I note how using f10, the writing on the signs is clear front to back.

In monochrome, the grey on the camera right edge is less noticeable and the image feels more timeless.
