March 2026 - High 5 Iditarod

About the Image(s)

Canon EOS R10, ISO 400, 1/395, f7.1, 240 mm lens, polarizer, -0.33 eval, hand held.

The ceremonial start of the Iditarod. This young girl wanted to high 5 one of the teams. This section is about 12 miles long winding through Anchorage and crosses the hospital campus. (Easy access and parking) Very blustery today though with 9 new inches of snow thus far.

The "real" start is tomorrow in Willow, about 2 hours north. The dog athletes and their humans will race over the Alaska Range and across the tundra for 1046 miles to Nome.

The route honors the "1925 Serum" run of anti diphtheria toxin along outbreak along the western coast around Nome.

I like the gestures and the smiles on the competitors' faces. The white snow is really white. So often people snow can be greyish in photos. I wish there were a way to show the girl's face, but not possible from that position.   Posted: 03/11/2026 15:18:25

I was way too far away to get there in time to photograph the young girl. I do have some from the spectator's viewpoint and it is rather boring since you see the back of the sled and a hint of dogs.

Those pups move fast so getting them in focus is pure luck.
For those that are interested, the race has had record low temperatures -70F, not including the windchill. Reports say it has been grueling due to cold, blowing snow which creates route finding challenges.   Posted: 03/11/2026 19:29:47
