Girlfriends at the Bean by Carolyn Todd-Larson, PPSA, AFIAP

April 2024 - Girlfriends at the Bean

About the Image(s)

Date taken: October 2011
Exposure: ISO 100, f/5.6, 1/400 sec
Focal length: 16.4mm
Sony DSC-H7

Taken during my first visit to Millenium Park in Chicago, I captured these young women posing for a photo at the Bean. I don't know these people. I just happened to be there and caught this shot.

If you haven't been to Chicago to experience the Bean in all its facets, make it a point to get there the next time you visit. It is a great deal of fun with lots of street photography opportunities.

I would have included the bean somewhere in the image. I usually try not to cut off peoples legs and the people in the upper right are distracting   Posted: 04/02/2024 15:09:29

Thank you for your perspective. To capture the bean in its entirety would have been a different photo.   Posted: 04/04/2024 07:26:51

I find the composition intriguing with three separate groups: the friends, the reflections in the upper corner, and then the feet in the lower corner. The strength of the image is the contrasts in what the groups are doing.   Posted: 04/03/2024 23:06:41

I also find the composition intriguing. I like the different groups, including the ones on the upper right. But I am actually confused, as it looked initially like the group of girls were reflected in the bean, but the more I looked at it, the more I thought the reflection isn't the girls facing the bean. Some of the colors of the hair and the clothing is different. All of that is intriguing!   Posted: 04/08/2024 00:07:17

You caught something that I didn't catch - it appears that the Bean changed/darkened the color of their hair and clothing. Perhaps because the Bean is dirty or discolored, I don't know. I will need to go look at other photos I took to compare. Thanks for your observation.   Posted: 04/14/2024 13:04:45

My eye was drawn to the photographer on the left, and at first, I thought most of these ladies were looking down at something, perhaps where the camera was aimed. There are a few stories in this composition. Enjoyed it.   Posted: 04/10/2024 20:03:18

It took me a minute to realize that it was a mirror. It is an interesting photo but I think I like the whole bean better since I am completely unfamiliar with this structure. It makes more sense after seeing the B&W photo. And the skyline is amazing.   Posted: 04/20/2024 09:00:38
