January 2025 - Human Carrying Human

About the Image(s)

Happy new year 2025, to all of you! Lets learn from each other with every passing month!

An image is captured in Kolkata, India where Human Cart is still in operation. Initially I was reluctant to use it, but then I thought it is a source of earning for them. So I came up with the solution to overcome my guilt, that I hire them & then pay them double-treble the amount they ask for.

Top angle & tram tracks to lead the path of cart made my image, I thought

This image contrasts with my memory of visiting India 40 years ago where the streets were swarming with people and a few rickshaws. I sought safety from the crowds in the street by climbing into the rickshaw. I understand your emotion and mixed feelings.

The image uses the contrast in scale (woman vs the cars), color (blue vs orange/yellow), and the curved line, to reveal the story. The image shows movement with the woman's shawl flaring out balanced by her bent arm.

It is interesting to compare people walking on the sidewalks, most vehicles are taxis, and this woman. How will the street look in 20 years from now.   Posted: 01/05/2025 16:43:13

V nice analysis, Judith. Thanks for it. Only correction, the cart puller is a man & not a woman.

thanks once again   Posted: 01/06/2025 03:09:38

I really appreciated the story that shows the contrast of modern travel and a more ancient mode of transportation. I think the colors might pop a little more if the image was lightened a bit. I would have liked to see a little more of the front of the rickshaw, if that would have been possible, since seeing only the handles doesn't actuall provide much information about the actual vehicle.   Posted: 01/06/2025 10:34:50

True, ur point is valid, Ardeth but with 24 mm, I couldnt cover additional part of cart. Human cart ride is not smooth too, getting sharp shot also a bit difficult   Posted: 01/07/2025 02:01:44

I understand that you could not get more of the rickshaw and your reasons. It is a wonderful comparison of the new and the old modes of transportation. I also like the movement of his shawl. Lightening it would also be good. Very interesting shot Vinaya!   Posted: 01/13/2025 11:38:12

It is interesting how the train tracks act as a leading line to the modern vehicles ahead. Although I cannot see the face of the rickshaw driver, I still get the feeling of the hard work the rickshaw driver needs to pull someone in a cart. Karen Kohn   Posted: 01/13/2025 16:52:53
