About the Image(s)
While waiting for the doors to open for a show I attended, I noticed three women and a man who were either holding a beverage or looking at a cell phone while the one in the middle of the two seated seems to be glancing at the other girl’s cell phone. I took this with my cell phone.

Hi Karen, There is some quiet intrigue in this image. The ubiquitous phone draws attention twice. The woman at lower left casts a glance toward the photographer while the man is lost in his daydream. It's a bit of ordinary life. There is a little feeling of confinement with closed doors and the grating separating the people from the art. On the technical side, including their feet would make the people 'whole'. Cropping out most of the ceiling would increase attention to the people. I agree. It does not add anything to the story. Karen Kohn   Posted: 05/05/2025 00:34:53
I agree with the cropping suggestions that Karl made. I see these scenes in doctor's offices all the time.   Posted: 05/08/2025 10:33:13
I definitely should have given more lower space and moved my phone lower to avoid the larger upper part. Karen Kohn   Posted: 05/08/2025 16:59:57
Karen, you acknowledge the observations given by the other members of the group and from visitors in this case, but you keep making the same mistakes month after month. All your submitted images are always amputated and most of the times not straight. It seems that you do not give any thought to the image to be created before the click. Visit other groups, and review our group previous months and try to create a plan in your mind before next time you plan an outing for photography. It seems to me that your photography is incidental to another activity, and therefore they always come out as a snapshot. You can do better than this.   Posted: 05/09/2025 17:19:42

With architectural images including interior spaces, a good practice is to compose the image with more space around the edges in case you wish to straighten the image. The same rule applies for people. There are general rules in portraiture about how to set the crop for body parts.
Taking this type of image requires keen observation to note no distractions such as the woman in the background and to be patient until she moves.
When you review your images, consider what story you are telling and how can you crop the image to draw the viewer's eye to the story. What elements are there in the scene which draw the viewer's eye away from the story. The viewer's eye goes to the brightest area in the image (white ceiling lamp and white ceiling) and the crooked wall lines. In the crop attached, I cropped off the light. I also straightened the image in LR.

For me, the key to a good human interest photojournalism story is a subject that grabs my attention. I think it is difficult to find something here that draws my eye. A more complete story would be if the two ladies looking at the phone were laughing or grimacing or crying, or if the setting or activity was more compelling.   Posted: 05/10/2025 16:51:55
