A tour of the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway, included walking behind the main sanctuary where the floor of a small chapel room was being restored. I only had a few minutes to compose this shot, which had a wide contrast in lighting, with the worker's bright light on his task and the dark shadows of the little room.
Nikon D850, Nikon 18-300 lens @ 28mm. I shot at f/5.6, shutter speed 1/100, ISO 3200.
In post processing, I cropped as much of the ugly pipes and mops on the right side of the image and some of the left side that included what looked like a large shop vac. I brought up the shadows on the beautiful carved and painted chest.

Good candid action shot, Ardeth. Yes there is a high contrast in f/g & b/g, but still you could manage the balance in exposure. there is a difference in tones also. b/g is quite warm whereas f/g is at a cooler side, But the engrossment of the main subject is so strong, it holds viewers' attention, at the right place.
Overall an image is sharp & interesting   Posted: 02/10/2026 22:16:31

Thanks for your comments, Vinaya. The contrast of the warm and cool tones is absolutely realistic, so I didn't attempt to make them match. The bright white of the worker's lighting is a major part of the scene. I do love that he is wearing clothing that matches the colors of the furniture!   Posted: 02/11/2026 08:52:46

Ardeth, the man is really involved in doing his job. I like his outfit and the fact that he has tools in the side pockets. The illumination coming from the side shows as his factions better, and also create s a shadow which gives depth. The piece of furniture in the back, full of religious illustrations adds a lot of interest to the image. The image is sharp. Last, but not least; I searched for what JULA printed in the bucket means, and it happens that is the DIY chain similar to Home Depot in the USA.   Posted: 02/11/2026 10:48:01
